The
idea of The Malaysia International Conference on English Language
Teaching (MICELT) was conceived in July 1995. Jayakaran Mukundan,
lecturer in the Faculty of Educational Studies, UPM felt the need
for a conference that would be organized by the Faculty of Educational
Studies, UPM. The Faculty of Educational Studies, UPM was the first
to initiate a true blue TESL programme, as a result of which the
country has benefited from fast-tracking the re-education of large
numbers of non-graduate teachers into graduates. This of course provided
relief to thousands of secondary schools, mostly rural, which were
finally able to acquire the services of trained English teachers.
