Title :
Asian Stories for young Readers (Volume 1)

Editors :

Alan Maley
Jayakaran Mukundan

The stories in this collection emerged from a creative writing workshop organised at Assumption University, Bangkok, Thailand, in 2003. Those who took part were teachers and academics from five countries in the region of Asia. They were inspired by the belief that reading materials for young Asians could and should be written by people who know and reflect the backgrounds of their Asian readers.
There are now many research studies into reading. They all show beyond doubt that extensive reading is the single most effective way for learners to improve their level of English proficiency. The message is, "Reading is good for you!" The more you read, the more English you learn. It is as simple as that.
So why do learners not read more? One possible reason is that the books on offer are unsuitable in one way or another. They may be too difficult, too long, too culturally unfamiliar. Or perhaps they may simply not be available.
One of the aims of the workshop in Bangkok, which gave birth to these stories, was to offer interesting stories, at roughly the right level of difficulty, for students of English in Asian countries. The fact that all but one of the ten contributors are from the region adds credibility to the stories which emerged.
Here you will find original stories from Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Myanmar and India. We hope you will enjoy reading them.
If you do - look out for the second collection of stories, which will soon be published. The stories in the second collection were written as a result of the second creative writing workshop, held in Melaka in September 2004.
