Title :
Asian Stories for young Readers (Volume 2)

Editors :

Alan Maley
Jayakaran Mukundan

This is the second volume of Asian Stories for Young Readers. Like the stories in the first volume, Asian Stories for Young Readers Volume I, all the stories in this collection were written in the context of a writers' workshop. This time, the workshop was run in Melaka in September 2004. All the writers in this volume too, are practising teachers in countries around the Asia region.
This time seven countries are represented. You will find here stories from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. There are stories about hardship and poverty, about marriage, about ghosts, about young love, about mystery and adventure. Indeed, there is something for every taste.
Research studies into reading show beyond doubt that extensive reading is the single most effective way for readers to improve their level of language proficiency. Reading helps improve all areas of language: vocabulary, grammar, writing, even pronunciation - as well as reading, of course. The message is simple: 'Reading is good for you.'
However, in order to encourage students to read more, we need to offer them interesting material which is neither too difficult nor too easy, and which is not too culturally unfamiliar. That is why we have encouraged teachers to write these stories. Asian teachers have experience of Asian students, and have an intuitive feel for what will interest them. We hope you will enjoy reading these stories. We hope to produce a third volume later this year.
