CONNECTING TEACHERS &
LEARNERS THROUGH BEST PRACTICES
INTRODUCTION
English language teaching in Malaysia has occupied
a prominent and sometimes controversial position in Malaysian education
for many decades. Today, the English language is considered an important
language in the country as its influence in commerce and technology
has become well established. It has also become a highly sought
after skill in the Malaysian government’s push for the development
of human capital. Occasionally, however, questions arise over how
best to present the English language to the new generation of students
at all levels of education as well as to the Malaysian work force.
Concerns are raised especially as mastery over the language amongst
the general population has been elusive. The contributions of research
findings have provided an important insight into the potentials
of different techniques and approaches. Similarly, experience on
the ground from practitioners has uncovered effective ways as well
as best practices in ELT. It is in this respect that English language
teaching (ELT) researchers and practitioners alike need to collaborate
to discover methods and find solutions to the ELT issues and concerns.
MICELT 2008, organized by the Faculty of Educational Studies, Universiti
Putra Malaysia, is intended as an impetus towards this goal. The
conference intends to promote the integration of research and practice
in order to consolidate this emerging tradition at the Faculty of
Educational Studies in line with the emphasis on practice at the
faculty and the research university status of Universiti Putra Malaysia.
